The main service of this directorate is delivering services on Archives collected and organized from different governmental offices and  library  services in Ethiopian collections  (Printed books and manuscripts)

Under this directorate, there are seven service sections. They are:- 





                                             1. Archival, reading section 
                            2. Manuscript reading section 
                            3. Ethiopian studies reading section 
                            4. Ethiopian languages reading section  
                            5. Microfilm library reading section

                             6.Research and study section and                      

                            7. Photo copy service section

1. Archives Repository and Reading service section

The Archives Repository and Reading services Section contain the following archives collected from different governmental organizations such as:-  
                             Ministry of the imperial palace  
                            Prince Asfaw Wosen  
                             Ministry of Interior  
                            Ministry of Finance 
                            Ministry of Health  
                             Ministry of National Bank  
                                     And others
In Addition to the above mentioned governmental organizations archives , there are also Archives kept privately by some known personalities.

The collected archives in this section are not only written documents but  maps, photographs, plans, charts and other documents are also available here.

Languages, Forms and Pattern of the Archives

Most of the  archives are written in Amharic language. Archives written in Geez, English, French, Italian and Arabic languages are also many in number. Many of the archives focus on  political, socio-economic, religious and historical events and other related issues about Ethiopia as well.

Researchers and readers should have recommendation letter from any governmental  or  non governmental insitutions 

                         Working hours 

                          Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

2. Manuscript Reading service section 
   

 The ENALA is the national repository of Ethiopian literary heritages and historical documents in Ethiopia. Some of these priceless literary heritages are kept and preserved in the manuscript section. The manuscript section was opened with the first establishment of ENALA in 1974. The section delivers services and makes  the information resources accessible to those who interested in the ancient manuscripts and printed materials.


 

 

Types of Information Resources in Manuscript reading section:- 

     1. Manuscripts written on parchment since 14th century;
     2. Manuscripts written on special paper and normal paper;
     3. Ancient printed documents which are books and journals and
     4. Manuscripts registered by UNESCO as world literary heritages such as:- 
                 The 14th century Gospel 
                 The 15th century Epistle of St. Paul 
                 The 15th century Passion Week 
                 The first printed material in Ethiopia Psalms 
                 Letter sent by king Tewodros to Queen of Britania 
                 Letter sent by king Minilik II to Moscow’s Cesar Nikolas II 
                  Letter sent by king Sahele Selassie to Queen of Britania 
                        
Service given:-

        1. Reading and Reference; 
        2. Visiting and explanation about Ethiopian manuscript                  and   their history for visitors

Criteria for users :-

1. Researchers and readers should have recommendation letter from any     governmental, non governmental or educational institutions
2. Group visitors are also expected bring recommendation letter from the   above mentioned institutions and should inform before coming to the Agency.

3. Ethiopian studies section


The section gives services for researchers. The collections focus on Ethiopian ancient, medieval and modern historical, political, economic, social, cultural and religious affairs. Furthermore, the books are about the history, culture and languages of the people and nations.

 The chronicles of kings and biographies of known persons. Journals of Ethiopian history, law, Education, agriculture and medicine  published in higher educational institutions and photographs, maps, pictures and Books about Ethiopia written by well known foreign scholars and writers like August Dilmann, Enno Litman, Antoine D, Abbadie, Carlo Conti Rossini, Job Ludolf, James Bruce, Igana Zio Guidi, Silvia Pankhurst and Richard Pankhurst are found in the library.

Languages of the books in the collections:-
Most of the books are in domestic languages and some other books are written in the English, German, Italy, and France etc.

                                          Working hours
                            Monday – Friday : 8:30 am – 5:30 pm
                            Saturday – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm


4. Ethiopian languages section

In this section, the books are written in different domestic languages. The contents of the collections cover the wide range of knowledge like history, language, literature, law,  religion, fiction, philosophy, psychology etc.

Service  given :-

       1. Reading and Reference

       2. Photocopy

 Criteria for users:-

 Researchers and readers should have recommendation letter from any governmental, nongovernmental or educational institutions.

                                     Working hours

                            Monday – Friday : 8:30 am – 5:30 pm

                            Saturday - Sunday : 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

5. Microfilm library service section    

The section holds more than 16,000 microfilms of manuscripts  written on parchment and microfilmed from different historical parts of the country. Some of the manuscripts are more than 1,000 years in age. The collections on this section show the indigenous and ancient writing history of Ethiopia.
